STEM Challenge Camp: Building a Heatsink (7th-12th graders):In this online program, participants will complete a STEM Challenge and develop and deliver an oral presentation related to the fields of mathematics, physics, and engineering. The challenge will be to build a heatsink. Heatsinks are devices used to transfer heat away from a computer processor as fast as possible. Without it, your computer could overheat. Specific topics covered include surface area, heat transfer, conductivity, Newton's Law of Cooling, and the Engineering Design Cycle. Students will interact with college students and STEM professionals.

Data Viz Camp (7th-10th graders): Visualizing Data to Make the World a Better Place!
What issues drive you? What’s your plan to change the world? We’re ready to see you explore your ideas! If you want to become a leader and make the world a better place, you need to convince people to join your cause. One way to do that is to show people data about how things are now. In this online program, you will select a societal issue that is important to you. Then you will use mathematics to create a visualization of data that demonstrates the need for change. Finally, you will give a presentation to convince people to join your cause. The program will be conducted by the Tapia Center for Excellence and Equity in Education at Rice University. Students will interact with college students and STEM professionals. Specific mathematics topics covered include proportions, algebra, length, area.

Algorithms Camp (7th-12th graders): Computational Thinking and Equity, in collaboration with Google's Operations Research Team. In this online program, participants will design an algorithm for an important societal challenge: the school assignment problem. In many cities around the country, students apply for a limited number of spots in high schools. It is important that a fair and equitable procedure is followed in deciding which students are allowed to enroll in which schools. Participants in this online program will learn computational thinking skills and will design their own algorithm for school assignment. They will then analyze how equitable their algorithm is. Participants will interact with college students and STEM professionals.

In the first part of the form below, please put the name and information of the parent. You will be prompted to pay on the next page.

The full price of the program is for 6-10 hours on Zoom, and 2-4 hours offline to develop a project, and continue to develop a product for a final presentation.
